2012 Chevrolet Sail U-VA launched in India at Rs 4.44 lakh

General Motors India have rolled out their all-new Chevrolet Sail U-VA hatchback in the Indian market today at a starting price of Rs 4.44 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi.)

The Sail U-VA hatch will be available in a total of seven variants, of which four will be powered by a petrol engine - Base, LS, LS ABS and LT ABS - and three will be equipped with the diesel engine - LS, LS ABS and LT ABS.

The petrol variants are being powered by a 1.2-litre MPFI unit that is said to produce 88PS of max power and 113Nm of peak torque. The Diesel engine comes in the form of a derivative of the 1.3-Multijet mill which was co-developed by GM and Fiat. Chevrolet calls it the 'Small Diesel Engine' and belongs to the same family as the Beat's oil burner. Both engines will come mated to a 5-Speed manual transmission. 

The ARAI certified mileage for the petrol variant is 18.2 kmpl and for the diesel variant is 22.10 kmpl. The diesel engine is said to be assembled at GM’s engine plant in Chakan, Maharashtra in order to save costs as compared to sourcing the mill from Fiat’s plant in Ranjangaon.

Some of the key features seen on the Sail U-VA are duel tone interiors, leather wrapped steering wheel, spacious cabin, power adjustable outside mirrors, rear power windows, large AC vents, Bluetooth enabled music streaming and mobile handsfree. Front power windows and power steering will come as standard on all the varaints of the Sail U-VA.  On the other hand, the hatchback gets alloy wheels only on the top-end petrol variants. Base model don't get wheel covers.

Safety features include ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, central locks, driver and passenger airbag, security alarm system, speed sensitive autolock, etc.

The Chevrolet Sail U-VA will be offered in a total of seven colour options - Cavier Black, Misty Lake, Linen Beige, Sandrift Grey, Summit White, Super Red and Switchblade Silver.

In the Indian market the Chevrolet Sail U-VA hatch will compete with the likes of Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Etios Liva and Honda Jazz to name a few. 

The Sail U-VA hatch is the first product from General Motors' Chinese partner SAIC that has already been well received in markets around the world. So much so, that the Sail U-V is said to be the most exported vehicle in China. With Sail U-VA, the American automaker is hoping to change its fortune in India. But it remains to be seen if this newest international bestseller has what it take to vow the Indian customer.
