Mercedes Benz India have rolled out its all-new compact sports tourer, the Mercedes Benz B-Class in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) at an event held today in Mumbai. The luxury hatchback is out in the market to compete with the likes of the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1.

All the units of the 2012 Mercedes Benz B-Class allocated for the Indian market in the first rounds of bookings have already been sold. The second round of bookings are expected to open in January 2013.

The all-new sports tourer made its global debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and was unveiled for the first time on Indian soil at an event held at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, followed with a presentation a day later at Mumbai's Hard Rock Cafe.

The Mercedes Benz B-Class is being offered in only one engine option - 122PS, 200Nm 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit unit - and two variants - B180 and B180 Sports. The petrol engine comes mated to an advanced 7G DCT 7-Speed dual clutch transmission and features Gear Shift Paddles on the steering wheel and ECO START-STOP function, while returning a fuel efficiency of 14.81kmpl. The 0 to 100 mark is achieved in 10.2 seconds with a top speed of 190kmph. It should be noted that a diesel variant of the B-Class is expected to roll out later sometime in 2013.

The new compact sports tourer has been equipped with features like Hill Start Assist, Electric Parking Brake and safety features such as the Brake Assist System, Tyre pressure loss warning system and crash sensor emergency opening function. It also wear seven airbags - Front airbags for driver and front passenger, Side-impact pelvis airbag for driver and front passenger, Window airbags for driver, front passenger and rear seat passengers and Knee airbag for the driver.

It boasts huge luggage space with 486 to 1,545 litres capacity and comes with a Panoramic surf. Other user experience features include a latest generation NTG 4.5 Audio 20 CD, Colour display, USB, Aux-in, Bluetooth interface and audi streaming.

The 2012 Mercedes B-Class is being offered with a 2 year/ unlimited km + 3rd year warranty included in STAR CARE package free of cost.

2012 Mercedes Benz B-Class launched in India at Rs 21.49 lakh

The Mercedes Benz B-Class will be initially brought into the country via the CBU route and will later be assembled in india from 2013 at its company plant in Chakan, near Pune.

The newly launched B-Class, is undoubtedly a practical car, but it does not have the SUV stance nor the size of the X1 and the Q3. With its hatch design, Mercedes is catering to a different niche, that of the super-luxury hatchback consumer. But will it be able to rack up the numbers like the competition? Guess, we will know that in the coming months.
