The smaller engined, locally assembled and cheaper variant of the M-Class has arrived in India.

Just last week we had reported that Mercedes Benz India will be introducing a smaller engined, cheaper variant of the M-Class in the Indian market on 10 October. And right on schedule, the 2012 Mercedes Benz ML 250 CDI has been launched in India at a starting priceof Rs 45.6 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune.)

The smaller M-Class is now being powered by a 2.2-litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine, while its bigger sibling - the ML 350 CDI that was introduced in India back in May 2012 at a starting price of Rs 66 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) is being powered  by a 3.0-litre, V6 turbo diesel unit. The 2.2-litre turbo diesel unit of the ML 250 CDI churns out 207PS of max power and 500Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 7-Speed automatic transmission and features the Start-Stop technology.

At the time of the launch of the ML350 CDI, the German carmaker had stated that the company will start assembling the M-Class at its facility in Chakan, along side the C-Class, the E-Class and the S-Class. And now, the ML 250 CDI SUV has officially become the first SUV in the company's portfolio to be assembled in the country via the SKD route.

We also expect an official announcement to come from Mercedes Benz India regarding the local assembly of the ML 350 CDI in the coming months, which is expected to drive down the cost of the SUV by a sizable margin.
