2012 Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI to be launched this month

After introducing the all-new Jetta 2.0 TDI in September 2011, Volkswagen's next target was to bring in a Jetta TSI to the Indian market and fill up the absence of a petrol variant in the current Jetta line-up. Just weeks after the launch of the Jetta TDI, OnCars managed to snag the first-ever scoop video of the Jetta TSI that was being tested in India. 

There were several speculations and debates over the engine configuration that would find a way in to the Jetta petrol. At the time we believed that Volkswagen would fit the 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine in the Jetta, since the same motor has been powering the Skoda Laura petrol and the Skoda Laura RS. However, according to our sources close to the company, Volkswagen Jetta petrol will indeed come planted with a 1.4-litre TSI engine, which will be launched in the Indian market this month. 

It is not too hard to understand the logic behind scrapping the already existing 1.8-litre TSI engine for the 1.4-litre TSI engine, given that the 1.4 TSI motor is known to be more fuel efficient that the 1.8 TSI mill. And what the Indian auto market needs in the current era of high petrol cost and diving sales of petrol-powered cars is a highly efficient petrol engine. So, in that sense, we think Volkswagen is right on the mark.

Now, Volkswagen has two 1.4-litre TSI petrol engines, tuned to give either 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque or 160PS of power and 240Nm of torque. However, the automaker is most likely to house the new Jetta with a 1.4-litre TSI engine, which delivers 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque. The engine could come matted with a six or seven-speed automatic DSG transmission in the top-end version. 

We expect the new Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI to be priced between Rs 12.50 lakh and Rs 16.50 lakh. Stay tuned to OnCars India, as we bring you all the details, price, specs and images of the new Jetta petrol when it graces the Indian market later this month.
