Mahindra may bring in facelifted SsangYong Rexton W to India

If it doesn’t look good, it isn’t good. That’s what we Indians like to believe. And judging by the latest buzz doing rounds around the officials over at Mahindra, they seem to think alike as well. The company apparently, is now looking to introduce the Rexton W that was recently unveiled at the Busan Motor Show in Korea. 

Mahindra earlier had planned to launch the outgoing SsangYong Rexton for India and had even showcased it at the Auto Expo held in January. However, the SUV didn’t evoke any positive response from the crowd mainly due to the outdated design and its oddball proportions; which is why Mahindra might consider launching the much improved Rexton W here in India. 

The updated Rexton W gets a big makeover to make it look more appealing than ever before. The SUV sports major transformation to the way it looks - the front-end is all new with new projector headlamps that come with LEDs, redesigned grille with oodles of chrome, all-new front bumper and wing mirrors with LED-turn indicators. The rear too has been revised: the wheel-arches blend in well with the rear bumper and the meekly re-shaped tail lamps mask the heavy back-end quite well. Overall, the Rexton W appears far more premium and elegant than the current design which plainly looks out of place for such a big SUV.

Along with an all-new design, the Rexton W also gets a new turbo diesel engine developed in-house by SsangYong. Called the e-XDi200 active, the 2.0-litre, in-line four cylinder replaces the current Mercedes mill. Mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox, this new engine features variable geometry turbocharger and a common rail direct injection, both of which help put out 155PS of power and 360Nm of torque. 

With the Rexton W, Mahindra and Ssangyong will hold a better chance of going head-on with established brands like Toyota and Ford in the Rs 20-lakh SUV space.
