Codenamed E2, the small 800cc diesel unit is being developed at Suzuki Motor Corp in Japan.
While, already ruling the small car segment in the country, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is about to make a 'check-mate' move in the coming months by introducing a new 2-cylinder, 800cc diesel powerplant, which is currently being developed at Suzuki Motor Corp in Japan. The puny powertrain codenamed, E2 is expected to produce 44PS of max power, while delivering a whooping mileage of 30kmpl.
Having said that, the project is still in its initial stages of development and if all goes well, the engine could come down to Indian for indigenisation in the next 6 to 12 months. Reports suggests that the small diesel unit could be ready by 2015 and may debut in the next generation Alto, the spy shots of which were first snagged by OnCars, back in May.
"The development is at a very initial stage. It is a ground up project, and a lot of effort is being put in. The engine has to deliver the required level of performance, needs to respond ably, deliver on the power as well as fuel efficiency. It will take at least a couple of years or may be more to be ready." a company spokesperson said.

Maruti Suzuki who revolutionized the Indian car market with its small car, Maruti 800 back in early 1980s is now once again at the forefront to offer the Indian market what they want the most in the current era of steadily rising petrol cost - a highly efficient diesel-powered small car. Rest assured, when it comes it is sure to be a game changer in the India auto industry.
