The brand will roll-out first of the models in early-2014.

Earlier during the year, Nissan had officially announced that it will bring back its low-cost Datsun brand for emerging markets across the globe. The carmaker also confirmed that Datsun will make its debut here in India in 2014 with two low-cost models on offer. Now though, according to a report by Financial Chronicle, Datsun is said to be readying 5 new models for the Indian market.

The range will include at least 3 small hatchbacks and a compact utility vehicle, which could be either an Ertiga-sized mini MPV or a compact SUV to rival the likes of Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport. The fifth model is said to be a compact sedan and could be priced even lower than the Swift Dzire or the upcoming sub 4-metre version of the Mahindra Verito.

The cheapest Datsun model, an entry-level small hatch, is expected to be priced around Rs 2 lakh mark. The other two hatchbacks will be positioned at the upper-end of the small car segment and will take on a number of cars including the Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat, Honda Brio and to some extent, Nissan’s own small car, the Micra.

All of these models, when launched, will be up against established names and will have to face some serious competition. And to make a clean start in this highly competitive small car market, Datsun will have to get its act together, especially on a number of crucial parameters like pricing, dealer network and after sales service.
