The hike in petrol price is due to increased international price of fuel; hike will be effective from midnight.
The petrol prices have gone up again due to fluctuating barrel prices in the international market. The price per barrel of crude oil was hovering around $90 so far and therefore we had seen a drop in petrol prices twice in the past few weeks. However, the barrel price has gone up to over $104 per unit and therefore the state owned oil companies have decided to hike the prices of petrol once again.

The price hike will range from 70 to 91 paise per litre depending on the territory. The hike is effective from the midnight of July 23-24, 2012. The tentative prices for fuel across various metros are as follows:
New Delhi - Rs 68.48
Kolkata - Rs 73.61
Mumbai - Rs 74.23
Chennai - Rs 73.16
Hyderabad - Rs 75.80
Bangaluru - Rs 77.30
