The German sports car maker will offer the new 911 Carrera and Boxster in India by end of this year.
The premium car market in India is growing at a substantial rate for a while and the German sportscar maker, Porsche, hopes to grab a bit more of action, in this booming market. The highest stake holders in the Porsche AG (and unofficial owners), Volkswagen Group, has now taken the responsibility of importing these premium cars in India. The company has also set up a subsidiary here, Porsche India, to get the brand more visibility and leverage in the Indian market.
The company plans to launch the new 911 Carrera and the Boxster convertible here by the end of this year. The 2012 MY (model year) versions of both these cars were launched in global market earlier this year. Of course, since all Porsches come to India as CBUs, it is no surprise that these will be made available here once the current models are completely phased-out. What it then means is, Porsche will now advertise a bit more and properly launch its cars here through launch function - unlike the delivery on order operations managed by Precision Cars India Ltd since 2007.
Porsche sold 312 units in India in 2011, which is more than double of 131 units that were sold in 2010. The company is yet to fix a specific target for its new Indian arm and still in process of finalising strategies. The current tie-up between Porsche and Volkswagen – wherein Volkswagen imports and distributes former’s cars; is based on their global strategy. Volkswagen AG is yet to officialise the takeover, due to pending litigation over Porsche in US and Germany, but might formalise the same by end of this year.
Porsche is still not a known brand among the Indian masses and that is probably the reason for lower sales figures. Also, most of the cars in Porsche range are two-seaters with low ground clearance, which are not preferred by the Indian customers. However, their premium SUV, the Cayenne, is doing quite well here.
