Fiat's 1.3-litre multjet turbo-diesel engine, tuned to produce 75P will power the Rio SUV.
At the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi, Pune-based automaker, Premier Automobiles Ltd had unveiled the facelifted version of the petrol powered SUV. However, the diesel powered variant could not see the light of the day in India, due to it's inadequacy of meeting the BSIV emission norms.
Nonetheless, the company had promised to introduce the diesel powered Rio SUV in the Indian market by May 2012. Back then there was also the initial talks with Fiat to source the 1.3-litre mutlijet turbo-diesel engine to power the Rio. Infact, the 1.3-litre mill was also on display in the Premier's stall at the Auto Expo to assure its customers that the diesel variant is on its way.
Now, according to our sources close to the company, the diesel-powered Rio could be launched by the end of this month. Reassuring us further, is the company's official announcement, to source the 1.3-litre power plant from Fiat, which was made last week.
According to the agreement that will take effect anytime now, Fiat will supply the 1.3-litre unit, tuned to produce 75PS of power, which currently powers the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Tata Vista. The engines will be built at Fiat's Ranjangaon facility, which supplies 1-lakh units of the same engine to Maruti Suzuki every year.
