The French company may export new small car to Europe from India, under its low cost Romanian brand.
Joint ventures, long-term alliance on R&D, platforms, components and even facility sharing is the new mantra used by most manufacturers to save costs and be competitive in today’s world. That is why we get to see same engines powering different cars of different brands, cars from two manufactures with almost same interiors and in some cases almost identical cars with different badges. Volkswagen has been doing this efficiently for quite some time globally and here in India this is even more clearly visible in operations of Renault Nissan alliance.
It began with Nissan reviving their low cost brand Datsun; announcing that new budget car will be launched in 2014. It was announced that the car will produced at their joint facility in Oragadam, near Chennai and will be exported to few other emerging markets from India. Just few days back Renault confirmed that they are developing a global small car that will be launched in India first. It was not difficult to guess that this will be yet another version of the Nissan Datsun compact car, which will be ready in 2014.
So, now that Renault has confirmed 2014 small car for its low cost subsidiary, Dacia, we know that we are once again talking about the same product. Renault has confirmed that the new Dacia small car will be called Towny and the French magazine L’argus informs that will be priced as low as Euros 5,000. This car will compete with products like the VW UP! and the Skoda Citigo in ultra compact segment (by European standards).
If the car goes on sale in UK, the right-hand-drive version will be exported from India, just like plans for the compact SUV Duster. We don’t think Dacia brand will come to India though, as Renault will sell this car here under its own brand.
