Luxury cross-over from Volvo to receive its first major design update

Volvo releases sketches of the 2014 XC90

The XC90 has been around for quite some while now. Ever since its launch in 2002, the  cross over hasn’t received any major upgrades. Apart from minor facelifts in 2007, where the front fascia and the rear were restyled and engines were upgraded, the XC90 never really received any major changes. Being one of the best selling Cross-over in the US at some point of time, the XC90 will receive a major design change only in 2014.

Following the recent launch of the 2012 XC90 which had a few refinements on the interiors and exteriors, the next XC90 will follow a completely different design philosophy which the current lineup follows as the recent sketches released by Volvo suggest.  Also unique to the new model is the fact that Volvo will follow the Scalable platform architecture (SPA), which means everything from the small car to the luxury sedans, will be built on the same platform as most German manufacturer are already doing. The new generation of the XC90 will also lose the five and six cylinder engines to make way for four-cylinder turbocharged engines. Hybrid options also seem to be on the cards for Volvo.

Now the current XC90 made a different kind of a debut in India by being featured in the movie ‘3 Idiots’. With this new model not making it to the production line for another two years, we can only expect Volvo to launch this vehicle in India only in 2014.
