Volvo sets an ambitious goal -"By the year 2020, nobody is to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo."

While, most manufacturers big or small fixate their goals and measure their success based on monthly sales figures, the Swedish automaker Volvo who already has a well-established reputation of building some of the safest cars in the world has set an even more ambitious goal - By the year 2020, nobody is to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo.
And to achieve its goal, the company has announced three new safety technologies that are currently under development, all of which are tailored to the way drivers behave in the modern traffic environment.

Autonomous Driving System
First up is the Autonomous Driving System, which uses a camera and radar sensors to follow the vehicle ahead. It automatically controls acceleration, braking and steering in slow-moving traffic, by detecting if the car in the front is braking heavily or changing direction too quickly.

Intersection Support
Next up is Volvo's Intersection Support system, which once again uses in-built sensors to read traffic conditions and can brake the car automatically, if a potential impact is detected. This system is aimed to reduce the risk of accidents, while turning or switching directions at crossroads and junctions.

Animal Detection System
Lastly, the company is developing an Animal Detection System that will help a great deal in avoiding accidents involving wild animals, which causes major traffic problems in some parts of the world. The system is based on Volvo's Pedestrian Protection System and automatically brakes the car when an animal is detected on the road ahead. The system isn't foolproof, but the company hopes that this technology will greatly reduce the risk of any serious injuries to passengers.
