The more the number of cylinders, the more power that can be generated from a given displacement. Manufacturers are cutting down on this figure now - less manufacturing costs (lower sticker prices) and increased fuel efficiency (less internal friction) are the obvious benefits.
Valves are what allow air and fuel in and out of your engine. More the valves, the better your engine will breathe and the more efficient it will be. The 2-valve-per-head designs offer very good torque at low revs, making them very good for commuting.

Description
This is the starting point of four-wheeled ownership for most, and it isn't hard to see why. The successor to the Maruti 800, it has better safety, newer, more efficient engines and in K10 guise a surprsing amount of performance as well. Spares are really very inexpensive, and regular servicing is very affordable. However, this is bare-bones motoring, so don't expect many creature comforts or safety features.
Nissan's first made-in-India effort is this Swift-sized hatch, and if you can get past the slightly goldfish looks you'll find a solidly engineered product that deserves to do well. Shame that ABS is offered only on the top-end petrol variant, though.
