Description
The all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, launched in early 2012, departed away from the typical three-box proportions of the earlier model. The new model donned a shorter boot to bring the overall length of the car less than four meters to attract better tax benefits. The new DZire was therefore cheaper than the older model, but since it is based on the new Swift’s platform, it is more spacious and has better features. The diesel and petrol engines are frugal and backed by Maruti Suzuki’s robust service network.
The Mahindra Verito is essentially a re-badged Logan. It boasts of a new grille that bears the Mahindra logo instead of the Logan’s Renault emblem. The tail gate has a chrome strip on the top end models. The engines remain the same as the Logan, with the frugal 1.5-litre dCi diesel from Renault-Nissan being the hot favourite.
Toyota’s made-for-India car, the Etios, has been an instant hit amongst the crowd. The Etios ticks all the right boxes by being spacious, fuel efficient, peppy and cheap at the same time. Its conservative styling doesn’t make it a head-turner, but has been accepted well by the market. Though the build quality has been a concern early on, the Toyota reliability more than makes up for it.
