Inflatable bags of gas that deploy in the event of a crash, preventing injury - for example, like that arising from a driver's face hitting the steering wheel during a crash. In cars with eight or more airbags, they practically surround the occupants in a crash, insulating them from the worst. They need to be used in conjunction with seat-belts, else they aren't effective.

Euro-NCAP rating

No. of cylinders
The more the number of cylinders, the more power that can be generated from a given displacement. Manufacturers are cutting down on this figure now - less manufacturing costs (lower sticker prices) and increased fuel efficiency (less internal friction) are the obvious benefits.

Valves per cylinder
Valves are what allow air and fuel in and out of your engine. More the valves, the better your engine will breathe and the more efficient it will be. The 2-valve-per-head designs offer very good torque at low revs, making them very good for commuting.

Description

Hyundai's new smallest car grabbed headlines with the incredible starting price, but to get power steering and air-con you'll have to shell out at least Rs 3.5 lakhs. It looks smashing, both inside and outside, and the interior space will pleasantly surprise you. No ABS on any of the variants to keep costs down, though a driver airbag is available on some.

This is the starting point of four-wheeled ownership for most, and it isn't hard to see why. The successor to the Maruti 800, it has better safety, newer, more efficient engines and in K10 guise a surprsing amount of performance as well. Spares are really very inexpensive, and regular servicing is very affordable. However, this is bare-bones motoring, so don't expect many creature comforts or safety features.

The Indica has been revamped with a few additional features, and the e-Xeta is a part of the refresh. You can now specify one with Bluetooth connectivity, the audio system has an aux in and USB port and alloy wheels with your e-Xeta.

Chevy's cheery little Spark is bare-bones basic, but the price makes it good value. It also is a surprisingly good car to drive, considering its proportions. In top-end trim one can get ABS and an airbag, which is commendable. Tall people will find the driving position too 'knees apart' to be comfortable.
