Airbags
Inflatable bags of gas that deploy in the event of a crash, preventing injury - for example, like that arising from a driver's face hitting the steering wheel during a crash. In cars with eight or more airbags, they practically surround the occupants in a crash, insulating them from the worst. They need to be used in conjunction with seat-belts, else they aren't effective.

Euro-NCAP rating
The European New Car Assessment Program rates all new cars sold in Europe on a scale of 1-5 stars for safety. Only cars that are sold in Europe and with ABS qualify for the test, so the ratings for the Indian versions might differ. It's still a good indicator of how safe a car is.

No. of cylinders
The more the number of cylinders, the more power that can be generated from a given displacement. Manufacturers are cutting down on this figure now - less manufacturing costs (lower sticker prices) and increased fuel efficiency (less internal friction) are the obvious benefits.

Valves per cylinder
Valves are what allow air and fuel in and out of your engine. More the valves, the better your engine will breathe and the more efficient it will be. The 2-valve-per-head designs offer very good torque at low revs, making them very good for commuting.

Description

The Land Rover Evoque is a stunning piece of art that is carried over as it is from its conceptual form. But apart from being a good looker, the Evoque also manages to tackle broken roads quite well. A little steeply priced though as compared to the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3 – but then, art always demands an exclusive price tag!

If you want to do the school run in ultimate comfort, get yourself one of these. It may not be economical, but its AWD will get you anywhere you want to go within reason. Comes with standard Merc creature comforts and the exclusivity of the three-pointed-star club.

This five-seater SUV is scheduled for a revamp soon, but as it stands, the M-Class is one of the last true SUVs. It can be specified will all the required hardware for off-roading and will venture much farther off the beaten path than any of its rivals except for the Montero - but it still manages to be nice to drive on tarmac. Get one with AMG kit if you want an urban crawler.

The new X3 is new, improved and offers two diesel engines. The AWD system is so advanced that it can send all of the engine's power to a single wheel if required! The X3 straddles the gap between an executive sedan and a full-size SUV, making the best of both. There's a decent amount of space, the ability to get through the worst that the monsoon roads can offer, and the looks and confidence that only an SUV can provide. It even manages to be good to drive, thanks to its Bavarian genes.
