The ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show has played host to the debut of a raft of all-new, exciting models including the brand new hybrid versions of the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport.
The Range Rover Hybrid and the Range Rover Sport Hybrid are the first-ever production hybrid models from the legendary luxury brand. Land Rover says this new hybrid versions offer an uncompromising blend of performance and economy and astonishing fuel economy.
Under the hood, the new Range Rover Hybrid powertrain combines the brand’s popular 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor mated with the 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The hybrid system, including lithium ion battery pack, inverter and electric motor weighs less than 120kg.
The electric motor produces 170Nm torque to boost acceleration and drives the vehicle in EV Mode. The motor also acts as a generator by charging the battery through regenerative braking when the vehicle is slowing. In driver-selectable EV mode the Range Rover Hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 48kmph for a range of up to 1.6km before the diesel engine seamlessly restarts.
The total power output of the diesel engine and electric motor is 340PS and a class-leading 700Nm torque between, resulting in impressive performance. Both models the hybrid Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport are capable of accelerating from 0 to 100kmph in under seven seconds, with a top speed of 218kmph.
As far as straight-line performance goes, both these new models are said to perform identical on the road as their kerb weights are nearly even with the Range Rover weighing 2395kg and the sportier, seven-seater Sport weighing 2372 kg. Bookings for both these versions in the UK will open from September 10 with first deliveries in early 2014.
