Maruti Suzuki has been working on its all-new SX4 for quite some time now and the production-ready prototypes are already out for the first phase of homologation. In fact, our friends at Team BHP have even managed to get photographs of the test mules. The design is a major departure from what the SX4 has worn so far. It takes most of the design cues from the AuthenticS Concept that Suzuki had showcased a few days back.

Here are some key points about the upcoming SX4 then:

-       - The 2014 SX4 will be shown at the 2014 Auto Expo and will be launched commercially immediately after the showcase.

-       - The new SX4 will provide cabin space that will rival the likes of the Nissan Sunny.

-       - The steering & suspension setup is tuned for a sportier performance than outright ride comfort and will target the younger generation of consumers.

-       - The suspension setup will feature anti-roll bars at the front as well as at the back.

-       - The top-end variant will make use of 195-section, low profile tyres on 16-inch rims.

-       - The new SX4 will be sold with a 1.4-litre K-series petrol engine in manual and automatic transmission options, while a 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced Multijet diesel engine (DDiS in Suzuki speak) will power the diesel variant.

-       - The new SX4 will come with a push-button starter (keyless go) like the Nissan Sunny.

-       - A micro-hybrid system with brake-energy regeneration has also been evaluated for the new SX4 and could be incorporated on the range-topping version.

-       - The new SX4 will be lighter than the outgoing model and will sit on a shorter ground clearance.

-       - ABS and front airbags are expected to be standard across the range.

-       - Upon launch, the new SX4 will be priced lower than its archrival - the Hyundai Verna.

The YL1 will go on sale in 2014 and will target the Nissan Sunny and the Hyundai Verna – which currently leads the segment. While the new design and the inclination towards a sportier performance could turn around the fortunes for the SX4, its real competition could come from the upcoming fourth-generation Honda City, which is also going to bring along a diesel weapon.
