BMW’s upcoming sporty SUV, the X4 is reportedly set to make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show in January next year. Near production-ready prototypes of this new model have been spied quite a few times, suggesting an early 2014 launch.
When BMW brought out the X6 – the car that introduced us to the sporty coupe-esque lines for SUVs, it created a new segment altogether and went on to become a big seller. Now with the upcoming X4, the brand is looking forward to expanding the segment. Like the X6 which is based on the more practical X5, the upcoming X4 shares its underpinnings with the X3. However, the X4 carries none of the boxy proportions of the X3 and features a sportier stance with a sloping roofline since BMW wants the X4 to look more aggressive and coupe-like.
Under the hood, the X4 is likely to come with the same set of engine and drive-train options as the X3. Expect the range-starting X4 20d variant to be powered by the 180PS, 2.0-litre diesel engine and the more powerful X4 30d fitted with the 260PS 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine. Now since the X3 is already offered with a rear-wheel drive version only, the X4 could well be offered with the same option.
