Mahindra will roll out the first model under its Korean subsidiary Ssangyong this month.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd have just announced that the company will roll the first model under its Korean subsidiary brand, the all-new 2013 Ssangyong Rexton SUV in the Indian market on October 17. The national launch is slated to get underway in Mumbai, followed by launches in the cities of New Delhi and Bangalore.
Mahindra & Mahindra acquired the Korean company back in 2011 and the Rexton SUV is the first product from Ssangyong in India and will be manufactured at Mahindra's company plant in Chakan near Pune.
The Indian automaker had first showcased the Rexton II model at this year's Auto Expo in New Delhi. However, OnCars.in got hold of the exclusive spy shots of the Rexton W - that is an updated version of the Rexton II - being tested on Indian soil - which, naturally confirmed our speculations that Mahindra will indeed bring in the newer Rexton W instead of the Rexton II model.
The third generation Rexton is built on the Mercedes Benz M-Class platform and uses an ultra-rigid frame and an intelligent torque vectoring system. The upcoming SUV is also expected to be equipped with safety features such as electronic stability program (ESP) with with emergency brake assist, hill descent control (HDC) and active rollover protection (ARP).
Being a product from the Mahindra & Mahindra stables, it will be a value-for-money offering without doubt and is expected to compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, the Pajero Sport, the Ford Endeavour and the Hyundai Santa Fe. The icing on the cake would be the price range though, which could start at a little more than the money you pay for a top-end XUV500. If Mahindra do manage to pull off that sort pricing, the carmaker could be looking at one more ridiculously successful SUV in their product portfolio.
