Maruti Suzuki India Limited has set the stage for the launch of their awaited Ignis urban compact crossover hatchback and it is likely to be priced in the range of INR 5 lakh to INR 8 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) which is similar to what the current generation of the Swift hatchback is priced at. But MSIL has already made it clear that the Ignis is aimed towards a different buyer, the millennial and is not suited to the family car buyers for whom they have the Swift and Baleno in their lineup. Ignis despite being a small car will be loaded with features and its design is especially inspired from the SUVs. It has been placed as a premium product in the lineup and will be retailing through the Nexa set of dealerships. But company has said it is a premium product that will be accessible for the masses as it will be in the same price range whose part the Swift is. Swift has a lot of times outperformed its counterparts which will give a confident stature to the Ignis as well. Big question, however is whether the Swift can face a similar situation on the launch of the Ignis? Will the buyer who has opted for Swift change his mind and go for the new feature loaded Ignis. Well we think there is a possibility of the buyer going for the newer product rather than the aging Swift whose replacement is still at least around an year away. There are several factors supporting this fact, like price bracket in which the Ignis belongs is going to be like the Swift i.e. 5 lakh to 8 lakh(ex-showroom). The design philosophy of the Ignis is contemporary with cues taken from several global products whereas the Swift has started looking a bit dated now. Ignis is loaded with features like a segment first 7 inch touchscreen infotainment audio system, other creature comforts, topping the current generation Swift in terms of quality. The cabin space is similar in both the vehicles which won’t be a much bigger differentiating factor.
Maruti Ignis is smaller in dimensions than the Swift with a length of 3700 mm, 1595 mm in width and a height of 1660 mm. On the contrary, Swift is 3850 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1530 mm in height. However, there is another possibility that cannot be ruled out where the buyer may opt for the premium Baleno hatchback or the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza compact SUV which offer a lot of features at competitive pricing and with great looks.
