Mahindra & Mahindra, country’s leading Utility auto major has launched all-new mHawk 1.99 litre diesel engine in the country that will power the new generation Scorpio. Moreover, the newly developed engine would be available for SUVs consumers in the Capital city as well as NCR region. The newly developed 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine will be capable of producing 120bhp of power. The introduction of smaller capacity engine came into effect after the verdict of banning registrations of diesel vehicles over 2000 displacement from Supreme Court in Delhi. However, Mahindra will introduce Scorpio with 1.99L diesel engine across the country.
The Mahindra Scorpio is one of the favourite SUV in India as it provides practicality along with high standard of durability. Along its life span, the vehicle has gone through various makeovers and facelifts in order to keep its head up among the competition, but still it wasn’t able to score very high in terms of its visual appeal. Mahindra has provided the Scorpio with yet another facelift, with things looking a lot better than expected.
It won’t be hard to distinguish the current facelift from the older version of the Scorpio as it still retains the same body structure as before. The major changes that the vehicle has received are mainly concentrated at the front and back of the vehicle. Though the vehicle bears an easily recognizable Scorpio face, it is completely restyled and now sports and much more aggressive stance. It is packed with angular cuts and sharp creases which provide it with an edgy appeal as compared to the earlier bulky one. There is nothing new to find on the side profile of the vehicle. We still get the swelled wheel arches which are joined by the moulded lower half of the doors. At the back the long signature tail-lights have been trimmed with the upper longitudinal portion chopped of and replaced by similar plastic fixture. Apart form that the boot lid accommodates a blackened our central panel which runs across its horizontal length and houses the chrome highlighted licence plate.
It’s a huge change in terms of the interior design if we compare the facelift Scorpio to that of the previous model. Following the same line as its exteriors, the cabin features a sharp and angular design profile. The cream and black colour scheme provides the cabin with and overall sophisticated ambience and feels premium simultaneously. There are silver insert at just the right places along with fabricated fittings on the dashboard and door panels. The rear seats are quite comfortable with decent amount of leg-room and head-room along with supportive backrests. The Mahindra Scorpio scores high in-terms of creature comforts as well. It gets cornering headlamps, micro-hybrid technology which automatically switches the engine off when not required, rain-sensing wipers, touch-screen multimedia system with Bluetooth connectivity, voice enabled navigation system, steering mounted controls and tire temperature and pressure indicator. For safety it gets dual-front airbags, Anti-Lock braking system (ABS), speed alert which buzzes an alarm when you cross 140km/h mark and rear parking sensors with voice feature.
Engine and performance
The base S2 variant of the Scorpio comes with a 2.5 litre diesel motor which is good for 75bhp and 200Nm of torque. The rest of the variant range is provided with a 2.2 litre mHawk turbocharged diesel engine which churns out 120bhp and 280Nm of torque. Both the power units are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Mahindra Scorpio competes against the likes of Renault Duster and Ford Eco-Sport with more competition arriving soon.
