Maruti Suzuki SX4 was launched back in 2007 to replace previous generation Maruti Boleno sedan. When compared with the outgoing model, Maruti SX4 was perhaps the better looking one out of the two. Replacing the low slung Boleno was the SX4 which was pretty high from the ground, thus having a ground clearance of 170 mm that allowed it to sail over speed breakers without much of an adieu despite four people being loaded inside. It was introduced with a tag line ‘Men are Back’ which was proven by the fact that the SX4 was the tallest car in its segment, that happened to be in C plus category.
Maruti Suzuki in those days was a segment leader when it came to small cars, as their premium products never found positive response from Indian car buyers. Their small car maker image hurt future prospects especially when it came to manufacturing sedans in a large way. It was believed that paying a premium for a Maruti car would not be a good idea. Maruti SX4 enjoyed a decent number run in the initial days but was eventually beaten by the likes of Honda City and Hyundai Verna which were then available in a nice 1.5 L diesel mill. To keep them at bay, Maruti Suzuki came back with a features loaded SX that provided goodies and an engine option of a VVT motor. It was the first choice for ferrying the Indian office bearers with several SX4s doing rounds around town with flashing beacons on top because of its ride quality and intimidating presence in front of the other cars of its segment.
Maruti Suzuki SX4 – Exteriors
Maruti Suzuki SX4 was a muscular sedan with an intimidating presence. This was possible via a prominent front grill that looks refreshing with a wide mesh and the Suzuki trademarked S logo sitting right in the center off it. Though over the year's, the grille was updated by adding in wide scaled three horizontal lines that provided this sedan a more updated look for its time. Meanwhile the bonnet lines flank the front grille and stop running just beside the front headlights which gives it a mean front profile. The lozenge shaped headlamps are side swept and improve the visibility with their halogen bulbs. The round fog lamps are placed in the bumper with matt black plastic molds completing a well proportioned look.
The huge windscreen provided perfect visibility to the driver. The SX4 was originally derived from the S-Cross that was sold in the European market prior to its introduction last year in India. Therefore this sedan saw abundance of ground clearance and in fact its taller stance among others in the class attracted many towards it. While, the rear is a little upswept and the tail lights are clear cut. The high set boot has integrated twin reflectors which aid in visibility. The boot loading lip is very high and loading of the luggage is indeed a bit of a task.
